Moving into a Residential Care Home is a big decision and it’s important to make sure you choose the payment option that suits you best. Your costs may vary according to your financial situation. It is for this reason we encourage you to seek independent financial advice before entering an aged care home to help you choose the right payment option for you.
To help ensure that care is affordable for everyone, the Australian Government calculates and regulates maximum daily fees and enforces limits as to how much you can be asked to pay for accommodation.
Means Tested Fee
From 1st July 2014, the Commonwealth Government via Centrelink now assesses the assets and income of all permanent residents entering a Commonwealth funded residential aged care home.
Every resident is assessed for income and assets upon admission to evaluate their capacity to financially contribute further towards residential aged care.
The Means Tested fee is a daily fee, which is capped at $26,964.71 per resident per year. It has a lifetime cap of $64,715.36 per resident.
The Department of Social Services notifies the resident/representative and the aged care provider of the maximum daily fees payable. The means tested fee is from day of admission.
If the Means Tested fee has not been calculated upon day of entry, the fees will default to the maximum rate until a determination has been made by Centrelink.
Method of Payment
Lions Haven for the Aged will issue an invoice at the beginning of each month for payment before month end.
Payment can be made either directly into our bank account or by cheque, cash or EFTPOS.
Your care fees cover daily living costs such as nursing care, housekeeping and meals. They are paid, in part, by all residents and are determined by the Department of Social Services who will also determine if you will need to contribute to the cost of your care.
